FIRM TEAMED UP WITH THE ACLU TO WIN INJUNCTION IN HIGH PROFILE CIVIL RIGHTS CASE
Teaming up with the American Civil Liberties Union and the international firm of Manatt Phelps & Phillips, Lee & Tran represented a Vietnamese Buddhist temple in a civil rights lawsuit against the City of Garden Grove in Orange County. The lawsuit arises out of the City’s refusal to allow the temple’s congregation to worship and build new facilities. After the temple filed the lawsuit and a motion for preliminary injunction, U.S. District Judge Cormac J. Carney found that the temple has demonstrated extreme hardship and that the city code preventing the congregation from practicing religion is likely unconstitutional. The Judge granted the temple a preliminary injunction permitting worshipers to use the space for religious and non-religious activities. The case is widely covered by both the Vietnamese and American media. The ACLU, Mannatt, and Lee & Tran represented the temple pro bono.
